World and European champions, Ballon d'Or and Golden Boot winners, and spectacular footballers are coming to Adrian Mutu's farewell match.

The stats—Romania’s all-time top scorer alongside Gică Hagi and over 100 goals in Serie A, far ahead of any other Romanian striker to have played in Europe's Top 5 leagues—speak for themselves about how great a player Adrian Mutu was. Unlike most of our football’s great talents, whose legacy remains only in the fans' anecdotes, Mutu combined his magic with undeniable numbers.

With a long career in Italy, starting as a youngster at the legendary Inter, then moving on to Verona, Parma, Juve, and Fiorentina, before finishing at Cesena, with brief stints at Chelsea in the Premier League and Ajaccio in Ligue 1, Adrian Mutu spent 15 years at the top of world football. During this time, he forged friendships that went far beyond professional ambition. His statistics remain forever, as do his friendships. The lineup for his farewell match at Sports Festival speaks for itself.

World Stars Team

Sébastien Frey

Having played for Inter, Verona, Parma, and Fiorentina, the French goalkeeper’s career mirrors Mutu’s path. The two share a strong friendship, especially from their time together in Florence, where they were both among the team’s stars. If there was one player guaranteed to attend Adrian Mutu’s farewell match, it was Séba Frey!

Vladimir Avramov

Frey’s backup at Fiorentina, Avramov will once again be his reserve for Team World Stars on Sunday.

Tomas Ujfalusi

A European Championship semifinalist with the Czech Republic and a Europa League winner with Atlético Madrid, the strong defender is, like Mutu, part of Fiorentina’s all-time best XI. Eastern European teammates in Florence, they reunite in Cluj.

Paweł Golanski

A right-back loved by Steaua’s fans, the former Polish international crossed paths with Adrian Mutu at ASA Târgu Mureș toward the end of Mutu’s career.

Fernando Couto

The legendary Portuguese international needs no introduction. Having played for Porto, Barcelona, and Lazio, and being a longtime friend of Gică Hagi and Gică Popescu, Couto knew Mutu well as an opponent and can testify to his talent.

Dario Dainelli

A longtime teammate of Adrian at Fiorentina, he’ll add one more match to their history together.

Fabio Cannavaro

World champion with Italy and Ballon d’Or winner, Cannavaro is undoubtedly the most decorated name at Sports Festival. He played with Mutu at Juve in a season when they won Serie A—although the title was later revoked due to the “Calciopoli” scandal. He was also one of Mutu’s toughest opponents in Serie A. His presence in Cluj shows the level at which Mutu played.

Alessandro Gamberini

Mutu’s Fiorentina teammate for most of his time in Florence—his attendance was never in doubt.

Paolo Cannavaro

Fabio’s younger brother played alongside Mutu early in his career at Parma and Verona but also faced him as a defender for Napoli.

Massimo Gobbi

Another teammate from Fiorentina’s golden generation.

Martin Jorgensen

A Danish international with over 100 caps, Jorgensen was a key midfielder for Fiorentina during Mutu’s era.

Franco Semioli

With hundreds of Serie A appearances and a few caps for Italy, he was Mutu’s teammate at Fiorentina for two years, a team that consistently challenged Serie A’s giants.

Claude Makélélé

A Champions League winner with Real Madrid, a World Cup runner-up with France, and a title winner in France, England, and Spain, Makélélé played alongside Mutu at Chelsea.

Riccardo Montolivo

An Italian international for a decade and a Euro 2012 finalist, Montolivo was one of Fiorentina’s stars during Mutu’s time—a talented and intelligent player.

Manuele Blasi

An Italian international in his prime, Blasi was Mutu’s teammate at Fiorentina and a longtime Serie A opponent.

David Trezeguet

A European and World Cup winner with France, a multiple-time Serie A champion, and a Golden Boot winner, Trezeguet played with Mutu at Juventus and was one of his main competitors for top scorer honors in Italy.

Alberto Gilardino

Together with Mutu, he formed one of the most beautiful and effective attacking duos in recent Italian football history at Fiorentina. Unlike Mutu, Gilardino had the fortune of winning major trophies, including the Champions League with AC Milan and the World Cup with Italy. On Sunday, we’ll see their special chemistry once again in the World Stars team.

Luca Toni

Another name that highlights Mutu’s exceptional playmaking ability: alongside Mutu, Toni won the European Golden Boot with 31 goals, many assisted by “Il Fenomeno” Mutu. He was also a World Cup winner in 2006.

Erjon Bogdani

Mutu’s teammate at Cesena in the twilight of their careers, Bogdani scored over 70 goals in Italy.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

One of the most spectacular and powerful strikers of his generation, Hasselbaink was a joy to watch, lighting up highlight reels at Boavista, Leeds, Atlético Madrid, and Chelsea—where he played with Mutu. Another reason not to miss this farewell match!

Coach: Cesare Prandelli

Last but perhaps most important, the World Stars Team will be coached by Cesare Prandelli—Mutu’s manager at Fiorentina. One of world football’s most respected coaches, Prandelli brought out the best in Mutu, forming a bond like no other. A mentor and role model for Mutu in his current coaching career, Prandelli led Italy to the Euro 2012 final and won multiple “Serie A Coach of the Year” awards.

Team Romania
On the other side, Team Romania, led on and off the pitch by the great Gică Hagi, needs no introduction:

Goalkeepers: Stelea, Stăncioiu
Defenders: Borza, Raț, Goian, Iencsi, Tamaș, Săpunaru, Pătrașcu, Maftei
Midfielders: Correa, Kiriță, Hagi, Zicu, Reghecampf, Rădoi
Forwards: Adi Ilie, Dănciulescu, Ganea, Daniel Niculae, Adi Mutu, Marica, Marius Niculae

A lineup that represents the best Romanian football has produced since the Golden Generation—for a match that promises to be pure entertainment, reflecting the brilliance of Adrian Mutu.

If Mutu’s stats speak for themselves, what more can we say about the legendary lineup at Sports Festival?
