The Mind Game: As Thrilling as Any Sport!
Chess, often considered the ultimate test of intellect and strategy, can be just as exhilarating as a football match or a sprint. While it may not demand physical exertion, it is by no means easier—mental endurance, precision, and deep analytical thinking are key. At this year's Sports Festival, attendees will have the rare opportunity to witness, engage with, and even challenge two of the most accomplished grandmasters in chess history: Ivan Sokolov and Viswanathan Anand. These distinguished guests are brought to Cluj by the Superbet Foundation in collaboration with the Romanian Chess Federation.

Meet the Masters: A Legacy of Chess Greatness

Ivan Sokolov – The Chess Strategist

A Dutch-Bosnian chess grandmaster, Ivan Sokolov has been a formidable presence in the chess world since earning his GM title from FIDE in 1987. His early achievements include winning the Yugoslav Chess Championship (1988) and securing the Dutch Chess Championship title twice (1995 and 1998). Beyond his illustrious playing career, Sokolov has excelled as a renowned chess coach. He guided the United Arab Emirates national team (2013-2016), led Iran’s national team (2016), and in May 2022, took over as head coach of Uzbekistan’s national team, leading them to gold at the 2022 Chess Olympiad in Chennai—a testament to his strategic brilliance and leadership.

Viswanathan Anand – The Lightning-Fast Legend
Few names in chess command as much respect as Viswanathan Anand. A five-time world chess champion, he was India’s first-ever grandmaster, achieving the title in 1988. His influence extends beyond competitive play—since 2022, he has served as Vice President of FIDE, shaping the future of the sport globally. Anand was only the fourth player in history to break the 2800 Elo rating barrier (after Kramnik, Topalov, and Kasparov), a milestone achieved in April 2006. Known for his blazing speed in his youth, he earned the nickname “The Lightning Kid“. Over time, Anand evolved into a universal player, widely regarded as one of the greatest rapid and blitz chess players of his generation. His major achievements in fast formats include:

  • FIDE World Rapid Chess Champion (2003 & 2017)
  • Blitz World Cup Winner (2000)
  • Numerous top-tier rapid and blitz tournaments
