Darren Cahill: “Simona Halep is a true source of pride.”
Darren Cahill, one of the most respected coaches in world tennis and former coach of Simona Halep, will return to the Sports Festival in 2026 as a special guest at the official retirement event of one of the greatest figures in Romanian and international sport. The gala match will take place on June 13, 2026, at BTarena in Cluj-Napoca, marking the highlight of the festival’s seventh edition.
Cahill’s presence will bring strong emotional significance to the moment, as it reflects one of the most important partnerships in Simona Halep’s career. The Australian coach guided her to the biggest achievements of her career, including her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros 2018 and the world No. 1 ranking.
Darren Cahill:
“I can’t wait to return to Romania, to Cluj-Napoca, for the Sports Festival on June 13 — a chance to celebrate an extraordinary champion. Simona is a true source of pride for herself, for her family, and for the way she built her career through hard work. Most importantly, she did everything her own way throughout her career. A two-time Grand Slam champion, a two-time year-end world No. 1, and an incredible player who spent most of her career in the world’s top five. We’ll have the chance to come together and celebrate a truly remarkable career.”
A partnership built over time, beyond results
The collaboration between Simona Halep and Darren Cahill began in March 2015, initially through an Adidas player development program, and later continued full-time from October 2015 – October 2018 and January 2020 – September 2021. Together, they experienced both peak achievements and challenging periods, with Cahill providing stability and support throughout some of the most demanding moments of Halep’s career.
With Cahill in her team, Halep won 10 WTA titles and reached the most complete version of her game, becoming widely regarded as one of the most well-rounded players of her generation.
Darren Cahill’s connection with the Sports Festival and Cluj-Napoca
This will not be Cahill’s first appearance in Cluj-Napoca. In 2019, he joined Simona Halep at the Sports Festival for a tennis exhibition played in front of a sold-out crowd of approximately 10,000 spectators. The event became memorable for nearly three hours of spectacular tennis, relaxed moments, humor, and direct interaction with fans. Cahill even stepped onto the court alongside Andrei Pavel, contributing to the special atmosphere of the evening.
That same year, Cahill also delivered a masterclass for coaches and young players as part of the Sports Festival.
A leading name in world tennis
Following his collaboration with Simona Halep, Darren Cahill continued coaching at the highest level. He is currently part of Jannik Sinner’s coaching team, achieving remarkable results together, including Grand Slam titles and the ATP Finals.
Throughout his career, Cahill has worked with legendary players such as Andre Agassi, whom he coached between 2002 and 2006 — a period highlighted by Agassi’s Australian Open 2003 title and his rise to become, at that time, the oldest world No. 1 in ATP history. Cahill also mentored Lleyton Hewitt, guiding him to the ATP No. 1 ranking in 2001, when Hewitt became the youngest world No. 1 in men’s tennis history at 20 years and 8 months — a record that stood for 21 years until surpassed by Carlos Alcaraz in 2022.
