Although with the national team, after the last great players from the Golden Generation retired, he couldn’t replicate, alongside Cosmin Contra, Cristi Chivu, and Mirel Rădoi, the exciting results of the ’90s, despite taking Romania close to qualification in 2008 from a brutal Euro group with France, Italy, and the Netherlands, Adrian Mutu was always in the spotlight, regardless of the team he played for. A unique, bold, and charismatic player, he was loved by both fans and his teammates.
Italy launched him into top-level football after a brilliant season at Parma, and it was Italy that brought him back to the top after the unfortunate Chelsea episode. After winning league titles with the great Juventus alongside stars like Del Piero, Nedvěd, and Buffon—titles later revoked due to the Calciopoli scandal, which also saw Juventus relegated—Adrian Mutu joined Fiorentina, where he became a true idol.
Over 200 career goals, more than 100 in the highly demanding Serie A at the time, and 35 for the national team—these numbers speak for themselves about who Adrian Mutu was as a footballer, just as he himself said in his farewell letter in Corriere dello Sport in 2016. But beyond the numbers, Adrian Mutu’s passion and emotion were always at the heart of his game and personality.
Sports Festival is finally giving Adrian Mutu the farewell match he deserved back in 2016. This time, it won’t be about numbers—it will be about passion and emotion.
Surrounded by fans and his close friends—great stars from Romanian and international football, just as he lived his entire career—Adrian Mutu is giving us one last glimpse of his footballing magic at Sports Festival in the Romania vs. World Stars match, on June 12, at Cluj Arena.
The lineup is filled with top names, starting with the legendary Gică Hagi: Pirlo, Fabio and Paolo Cannavaro, Gennaro Gattuso, Dorin Goian, Cosmin Contra, Tomas Ujfaluši, and Claude Makélélé have already confirmed their participation. And their presence, just like the numbers, speaks volumes about who Adrian Mutu was as a player: an elite footballer, recognized and respected by the greatest players of his era.
For one day, Romanian football returns to the elite with Adrian Mutu’s farewell match. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the reunion of some of the best national team players, as well as the great champions alongside whom—or against whom—Adi Mutu made his name in world football.
It will be a memorable evening, and how could it not be? Adrian Mutu’s career itself, with its highs and lows, triumphs and setbacks, was nothing short of unforgettable.
